My name is Lydia Staats. I'm 48 years old. I was diagnosed with breast cancer twice, between 2022 and 2023, and underwent 15 sessions of chemo therapy, and lost my hair both times. After the 15th chemo therapy, my hair grew back very slowly and it was very thin. I thought as time went by, it will become thicker, but after 13 months it was still so thin, that you could actually see my scalp in certain spots on my head.

Dear Lucille,
I want to share a deeply personal story — one that speaks to the challenges I've faced, not only with cancer but also with the stigma surrounding it in my community.
In 2010, I was diagnosed with skin cancer on my leg. It was a terrifying time. I went through 8 sessions of chemotherapy, and again in 2012. In 2013, I also underwent radiotherapy. Despite all the treatments, the cancer cells continued spreading. I made the difficult decision to have my leg amputated to stop it from advancing further.
Throughout this journey, the hardest part wasn’t always the medical treatments — it was the disbelief and stigma I faced from my own community. Many people didn’t believe cancer was real. Instead, they said I was bewitched. Some insisted I should see a Sangoma, claiming I had Ubizo (a calling to become a traditional healer), especially when my hair started falling out due to chemotherapy. Others said I needed to go to initiation school rather than the hospital.
It was painful and isolating.
I became extremely self-conscious, especially when I lost my hair. I avoided going out, afraid of being judged. But during one of my darkest times, I found something that helped me start feeling like myself again.
